Svishtov Municipality

Svishtov Municipality is situated in the northernmost part of Veliko Tarnovo District and borders with the Republic of Romania through the fascinating Danube River. On its shore is located the administrative town – Svishtov, which plays an important role in increasing the development of the transeuropean transport corridors and the expansion of communications along the Danube River, since Bulgaria has become a member of the European Union.
Svishtov is set approximately 80km north-west from the old capital Veliko Tarnovo, 75km north-east from Pleven, 280km north-east from the capital Sofia, and 260km north-west from the seaside city of Varna. There are various attitudes concerning the origin of the name "Svishtov". Some are seeking in Greek root - Sbestokastron, Sestos; and others Slavonic – “Svishtov” by analogy with “Velika” and “Mala Svishtovka” in the Check Republic. The specific location of the town /on a river/ favors the practicing of fishing and sailing. Many citizens and visitors of the town and the nearby villages also go sunbathing and resting on the riverside in the weekends.
The villages of Svishtov Municipality are tranquil and forthcoming, some of them lively and very well-developed. The nature is plain, but rich in water resources. Having a home near Svishtov and the Danube River might be very delightful and pleasant. Moreover, the municipality could offer numerous attractions. The century-long historical development of Svishtov has been fatefully related to the Danube River. The first settlers arrived in the Mid-Neolithic age (3000-2600 B.C.) At this important point of the Danube limes of the Roman Empire, a Roman fortress was built, laying the foundations of the once famous town of Nove. Later, during the Ottoman Yoke the town of Svishtov was a private, inviolable possession of the sultan, with independent administrative and financial government. All this along with the efforts and the strong spirit of the men of Svishtov contributed to the turning of the town into a recognized commercial and cultural center. So, Svishtov Municipality can impress the tourists with several cultural monuments, as well. On its territory one will find many archaeological, art, and architectural monuments of local and national significance. During the Bulgarian Renaissance, with the efforts of the members of the Svishtov community, the town came to originate a number of pioneering initiatives for Bulgaria. Among the town's highlights are the numerous stately temples built by patriotic Svishtov inhabitants. Other important landmarks of Svishtov are the first Bulgarian culture house named after Elenka and Kiril D. Avramov, the first Bulgarian choir "Yanko Mustakov", the City Library, the Nikolay Pavlovich Art Gallery, the Student Culture Center, the historical museums, the culture houses in the villages of the municipality. Also, one of Bulgaria’s great writers - Aleko Konstantinov, known as “Shastlivetsa” /”The lucky man”/, was born in Svishtov, where you can see his monument and a school named after him. The Svishtov Square is named “Aleko Konstantinov”, as well. In Veliko Tarnovo, however, there is a famous chain of restaurants bearing the name of Aleko’s nickname.
Except for nature and culture, Svishtov is known for its exceptionally well-developed educational infrastructure. The traditions in this field and the quality of education have helped shape the image of Svishtov as an academic town - a town of young people. The leading Economic University in Bulgaria – “D.A.Tsenov” Academy of Economics is located in Svishtov, where students are educated in full-time, part time and distance learning programs in the fields of finance, accounting and economics.
