Nikiup Village

Nikyup Village is located in a foothill area, the central part of the Danube plain. Nearby runs Rosica river. The remains of the ancient Roman town Nicopolis ad Istrum is located 3 km from the village of Nikyup, 18 km north of the old Bulgarian capital Veliko Tarnovo. The history of Nikyup is closely related to the history of Nicopolis ad Istrum.

Nicopolis ad Istrum occurs in 101-102 as a result of the victory of the Romans over the Dacians. Its founder was the Emperor Trajan.

In the past the Roman city is an important center where two roads crosses. The first one is the link to the western provinces of the empire, and the second one- to Mala Asia.
Residents are very colorful palette of many communities, including representatives of different social, religious, professional and other groups.
Today Nicopolis ad Istum is the subject of much research, both Bulgarian, Taki and foreign specialists.

Nikopol

After the destruction of Nicopolis ad Istrum a new settlement is founded, which is called Nikopol. It is located 1 km. west of the Roman town, near the present village of Nikyup. There are not many facts about this settlement. It is certain that Nikopol was existing until 1469 during the Ottoman rule. People who lived there had to pay high taxes and were robbed all the time by the Turks, therefore they moved west, where is now settled the village of Nikyup.

Nikyup

The first written evidences of the village of Nikyup date from the 15th century.
