As for the pretty municipal town of Elena, it sprang up as a center of small straggling hamlets, and today its population is about 7400 residents. The town is situated 37km south-east from the marvelous old capital Veliko Tarnovo and 280km from the present capital city Sofia. Elena has a rich common, historical and architectural heritage. During the Bulgarian Revival Period, the town was a center of craft-development - such as winery, homespun-tailoring and iron-smithing. Also, lot of cultural monuments have been preserved here /147/, some of which are of national importance – the house of birth of the Christian activist Ilarion Makariopolski /today a house-museum/, the Clock Tower, the first teacher training school “Daskalovnitsa”, the church “St. Nikola” and so on.
There are several legends about the name of the town – “Elena”. One of them tells of a bridal couple –Elena and Samuil, who were attacked by villains during their wedding. Nowadays, on this place is located the town of Elena, established by their mourning parents and named after the girl. Another story tells that the old church “St. Nikola” was sanctified on the day of the apostoles St. Konstantin and St. Elena, which is why the village was named Elena. Presently, the day of the apostoles St. Konstantin and Elena – 21st May – is celebrated as the town’s holiday.
