Tomorrow is Christian Family Day
Font size:  A  A  A
The Celebration of the Introduction of the Virgin in Bulgaria is also noted as the Day of the Christian Family and of the Orthodox Christian Learning Youth.
The earliest notice of the celebration of the holiday is from the end of the 1st century. A commemorative celebration is held and all of Christendom celebrates the Introduction. It is one of the biggest Christian holidays, it is honored by both the main Christian denominations - Roman Catholicism and Eastern Orthodoxy. On this day, both the pious parents of the Virgin Mary, Joachim and Anna, who brought her to the Jerusalem temple at the age of three, and the fulfillment of their vow to consecrate Mary to God, are honored.
By decision of the Holy Synod of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church from 1929, the feast of the Introduction of the Virgin Mary is also celebrated as the Day of the Christian Family in Bulgaria. In Bulgarian traditions, the introduction of the Mother of God was celebrated in a very limited circle - only with the parents and those of their children who were not married. They all went together to the church to pray for their family's health and favor. Then at home, gathered around the hearth, over a glass of wine, a warm pita and a delicious feast, they celebrated - in addition to the feast of the Introduction of the Virgin Mary - and the healthy relationship between them. The table was left uneaten so that the Mother of God would come at night, eat and bless the home.
According to the Orthodox tradition, the Introduction of the Virgin marks the beginning of the Christmas fasts and is associated with the coming winter and the anticipation of the church celebrations around the Nativity of Christ.
