Obedinenie Village

The village of Obedinenie is situated in the heart of the Danube plane, 30 km northwest from the Old Bulgarian capital Veliko Tarnovo and the same distance from the city of Svishtov and the Danube River. An ancient Roman road that connected important Roman cities - Nicopolis Ad Istrum (near Nikiup) and Nove (near Svishtov) passes near the village.

The most ancient people lived in this land were Thracians. We know that from the Roman inscriptions founded in the ruins of the castle called "Kaleto" near Obedinenie. The castle used to be on a main road connecting Nicopolis Ad Istrum and Nove - important cities in the Roman province of Misia.
In the Middle Ages in Obedinenie's area lived Bulgarians. There are ruins of buildings near the village.
At the time of Bulgarian independancy from Turks - 1878 - the village had two parts. The south part, which was bigger, was inhabited by Turks and the smaller one- with 54 houses - Bulgarians.
The legend says that the Turks founded the village on the place of destroyed Bulgarian village in 1770. The other legend says that dyado Belcho looked for a good place for agriculture with fresh water. He founded it only in Obedinenie. Belcho took a permission for this place from the local Turk leader Abdullah Aga in 1805. The first settler was very good builder and carpenter. Many Bulgarians from the Balkan came in this new place. They established two villages - Mekish and Tencha. Mekish means soft wood which growed in that area. Tencha means mineral spring.
In 1835 Bulgarians were qite a lot so they needed a church. But at that time it was almost impossible to get a permission to build it because of the Turks. Some brave Bulgarians tried to start building it at night but through the day the Turks destroyed it all. Finally, priest Nikola managed to take a permission for building a church from the Vidin's Turk leader who traveled near Tencha and Mekish. The first orthodox church was build in 1839 in Mekish. It existed to 1908 when a new one was built on its place. The new church was bigger and was called "St. Paraskeva. The first school was founded in 1856 - 22 years before the Bulgarian Independancy. It existed until 1892 when the new one was built. In 1929 was established the High school in Obedinenie.
In 1971 there was founded thermal water near the village and there is a chance for Obedinenie to be developed as SPA resort and tourist attraction in next years.
