| Exhibition in Sofia displays armaments of Seuthes 3 |

In 2004, archeologists doctor Georgi Kitov and Diana Dimitrova found a rich funeral of a Thracian ruler in a mound near the town of Shipka (Central Bulgaria). His tomb was quite huge and is among the best preserved ones in Bulgaria. Finely processed golden and silver objects, a bronze head of the ruler and other finds were discovered in this tomb. The find turned into an archeological sensation.
The inscriptions which proved that the finds date back to the period of Seuthes 3 (330-300 BC) are extremely precious. As the renowned Thraciologists Professor Valeria Foll said before RB, the period when Seuthes 3 ruled gave the beginning of the Odris Tribe period. The Odris Tribes were one of the most powerful and influential Thracian tribes. History has it that Seuthes 3 managed to beat back successfully ruler Lisimah who was the successor of Alexander of Macedon in Thrace and that he built a city where all Thracian Gods were honored. We also know about Seuthes 3 that he was the first Thracian ruler who started to mint coins with his image.
The exhibition held in the National Archeological Museum in Sofia takes us back in the time of this famous Odris ruler. The display is called “The Seuthes 3’s sword”. The sword, whose handle resembles eagle’s head, and the scabbard ornamented with golden patterns, are displayed after a long restoration. It was done due to the financial help of the Unicredit Bulbank. The exhibition also features a helmet with the name of Seuthes 3, his bronze knee-pads, golden applications of his armament and of the horse equipment of this ruler. The iron plates with images of ancient symbols of the sun also provoke the interest of the visitor. In the doctrine of the Thracian rulers, especially of the Odris Tribe, the ruler is a son of the Great Mother Goddess and the Sun God. We see sun symbols all across the period of Seuthes 3, says Professor Valeria Foll.
The town of Sevtopolis which was built by this ruler currently lies on the bottom of the Koprinka artificial lake. It was the capital of the Odris Kingdom of the year 320 BC. Its ruins were found during the construction of the dam lake in 1948. Archeologists explored these finds until 1954. The ancient town of Seuthes 3, as well as the Big Cosmatka mound, where the tomb of this ruler was found, are only some of the multiple historical monuments found in the Kazanlashka Valley. This valley is known as the Valley of the Thracian Rulers. Archeologists have explored so far hundreds of mounds in this region. Among them is the Kazanlashka Mound which was included in the UNESCO world heritage list.
