A wine festival to present the best wineries in the Balkans |
|
“If winemakers from the Balkans unite, they can prove that they are the fifth power in the industry worldwide after France, Italy, Spain and the US, and that the region is abundant in a rich variety of grapes and interesting wines,” said Galina Niforou, Executive Director of the Balkans Wine Forum and Festival, to be held June 14 to 17 at Grand Hotel Sofia. According to her, the winemaking industry in the region is experiencing an unprecedented renaissance and all Balkan countries have shown remarkable achievements in terms of quality, establishment of local grape varieties and marketing over the last 10 years. Galina Niforou reminded that the Balkan Peninsula is the birthplace of wine and vines and the regional brand should, therefore, climb to a new position. For the first time in the history of the Balkans, winemakers from more than 10 countries have united under the Wine of the Balkans brand - an initiative aimed at creating a positive image, both in the region and before the global wine community.
More than 20 top world experts will arrive in Bulgaria to choose the winners in various categories - white, red and rosé wines from local and international varieties.
“The Bulgarian forum is one of the few competitions in Europe, following the Australian model of evaluation, similar to the Decanter World Wine Award, which allows a more realistic evaluation of the competing wines,” said the Executive Director of the competition.
After the successful launch of the first edition of the Balkan International Wine Competition and Festival in Athens, Belgrade, Skopje and Croatia, the project will be presented in Sofia as well. Over 400 wines from 90 wineries will be presented in the Bulgarian capital. A total of 38 Bulgarian wineries will compete and 32 Bulgarian producers will be presented at the wine-tasting.
