Summer Garden Project for Kids
Font size:  A  A  A
When summer vacation boredom sets in, parents look for activities to keep the kids busy. A summer garden project for kids provides a chance to dig in the dirt, while learning something and helping the planet too.

Types of Gardens
Help cut down your grocery bill by planting a vegetable garden. A beginner's vegetable garden with "cool season" choices, such as cabbage, are great to start in the summer. A flower garden adds beauty to your yard. Plant flowers of all different types and colors, like carnations, heather and chrysanthemums. An herb garden is another good choice and can be done indoors too.
Composting
Composting is a great way to recycle, and the end result can help the soil in your garden. You will need "green" material, such as grass clippings, kitchen scraps and fresh animal manure and "brown" material like dry leaves and straw. Layer the materials and add moisture if necessary. The kids will need to turn the layers every few days. The heat of the summer will help speed up the decomposition.
The Birds and the Bees
Build bird feeders out of old milk jugs. Spread peanut butter on pine cones, roll them in birdseed and string them up to attract birds. Plant flowers that will bring bees and butterflies to your yard, such as a Butterfly Bush. You can then spend time identifying the different varieties of flying creatures that visit your garden.
