Swimming Pool Lighting Design
Font size:  A  A  A
Swimming pool lighting is essential for safety if you plan to use your pool when the sun goes down. Besides safety, a well-lit pool with an interesting lighting design adds ambiance and an alluring atmosphere that makes entertaining even more appealing. When planning your lighting design, take your yard, landscape and pool size and design into consideration to highlight the the best features.
1.        Outside the Pool
Landscape surrounding a pool is properly and decoratively lit at night.
Choose proper lighting to illuminate the edges and surrounding cement or stone around the pool to avoid accidental injuries. Swimmers need to be able to see where they are going when they exit the pool, and avoid slippery puddles whenever possible.
Enhance trees, shrubbery and waterfalls with lighting that shines up to showcase the object. This lighting would be minimal and basic with sole concentration on the object. LED (light emitting diodes) or solar lights work well for this kind of spotlight.
Light walkways and corners with larger outside lamps that illuminate larger spaces. These lights don't have to be ultra bright, unless you want them to. The point is to allow a soft glow that lights the dark areas and pathways you or your guests may use during nighttime dips in the pool. Insert small decorative lights, particularly solar lights, into the ground every one to two feet along pathways and the pool landing edges. Solar lights are extremely useful because they save you money on energy or batteries, as well as time and hassle because they won't "run out" like batteries or typical light bulbs.
2.        Inside the Pool
Pool lit from within.
Placing proper lights inside the pool and spa is crucial to nighttime swimming so you can see if there is anything or anyone in the water that shouldn't be. Avoid bumping into the edges of the pools, which could lead to serious injuries, by installing enough lights to illuminate the entire pool, particularly the outer edges and steps.
Built in lights, nestled in niches within the pool were commonly outfitted with incandescent or quartz halogen lights. These lights tend to be murky looking and are difficult to change as you have to remove the bulb from behind it's sealed case, and pull it up to the surface. They have long cords for this purpose. Consider updating your bulbs to LED lights the next time you have to change them if you have an older pool. LED lights last up to six times as long and are environmentally friendly.
Interior pool lights can be nestled in the sides of the pool, the bottom of the pool or both. For large lap pools, consider lights in the floor of the pool designating lanes.
Floating lights are another option that work for in-ground or above-ground pools. Light can be directed up or down into the water creating patterns within the pool. These lights are typically solar-powered or battery-operated. Above-ground pools can also utilize lights similar to floating lights, however they clip onto the side of the pool instead. Another option is a light that fits into the return fitting.
3.        Colorful Creativity
Fiber optic light displays are popular for swimming pools as well as the surrounding features such as waterfalls or aesthetically pleasing landscaping. They consist of cables that from a power source outside of and away from the pool with no electricity running through them, which makes them a safe alternative. Another reason for their popularity is they offer various color options. Fiber optics can make your pool blue, purple, pink or any number of other colors. There are options available to set the lights on a timer that scrolls through the colors making your pool change colors every few minutes, or however long your timer is set for. This technology is advance enough to also create light displays in your pool that is timed to music. Arcs of water spraying into the pool and waterfalls can be colored with fiber optic lights as well.
