Shelves |

Shelves are a design essential because they not only make it easier to keep a home neat, but create a natural display area within a room. Although it is possible to buy all sorts of ready-to-assemble shelving systems or have them custom-made to the space. The most elegant variety are floating shelves, that appear to hang unsupported. Custom lighting can be used to add light at the back and sides or to highlight the objects on the shelves. Shelves should be placed at a comfortable height so that they can be seen when either sitting or standing. Consider the size and height of the rest of the furniture within a room before fixing them in place. There are essentially two approaches to dressing shelves. One is to use lots of identical objects that can be arranged in rows- either vertically or horizontally. However, you must be careful they do not end up totally symmetrical; a blank space can be the ideal way of breaking the flow. The second is to use a variety of objects, such as hand blown glass, books, flowers and framed pictures. Remember the principle of layering that is so important when creating a room: first you have the grid-the shelves-and then you need to add depth through the carefully considered display of other interesting design ingredients. Look for balance not symmetry. You need to find a center point to your arrangement-perhaps a unique focal point-and then work out from this, both up and down and side to side. Achieving the right combination of scale, color, texture and form can take a surprisingly long time, so simplify the process by repeating motifs throughout. Something else that is important to realize is that it is not only what you put on shelves, but the blank space around them. Source Name: http://decoration.com
