The art gallery was founded in 1934, with works of artists as Boris Denev, his teacher Dimirtar Bagrilov, Mintcho Hadjiev,Ivan Hristov, Ivan Valtchev and others. During 1956 when the art museum was founded, the art collection is separated as an exposition in the tample of St Spas. During 1970 the art collection is separated as an art gallery. Art works from the rennaisance untyil today are collected and kept. The gallery has three sections – paintings, black and white dwawings and sclupture. Among them are also included drawings, aquarelle, posters, ceramic. The stock of the gallery amounts to 4700 artifacts. The importance of the collection is defined by the presence of artists with fundamental importance for the Bulgarian culture with many of their principal works. From the period of the rennaisance - Nikolai Pavlovitc, George Danchov, after the liberation of the Turkish yoke – Arno Novak, Ivan Markvichka; the bulgarian clasics from the 20-40 ies of the 20-th century - Vladimir Dimitrov the Master, Bencho Obreshkov, Zlatio Boiadjiev, Vasil Stoilov, Detchko Uzunov,, Ilia Petrov, Nenko Balkanski, leading authors from the 60-70 ies of the 20-th century – Dimitar Kazakov, Janaki Manasiev, Atanas Jarnov and others. From the masters of graphic technique are presented authors that worked during the 20-ies of the 20-th century until now. Among them are Vasil Zahariev, Petar Morozov, Davod Peretz, Todor Panaiotov, Christo Neikov, Zlata Dabova, Grogor Spiridonovand others. In the section for scluptures are represented works by Marko Markov, Mara Georgieva, Ivan Neshev, Ivan Funev, Nikolai Shmirgela, Lubomir Prahov and others. The poermanent exposition of the gallery is located in the renovated building and is opened in 1985. The first floor is occupied by an exhibition with a moto “Veliko Tarnovo through the vision of the artist” which is periodically renovated. On the second floor is situated the permanent exibition. The coillection of the gallery is constantly enriching with new incomings. A representative exhibition visits other cities of the country and are sent abroad especially to the fellowsdhip cities in Ukraine and Poland. The annual exhibitions made in the gallery in connection with the International festival for modern and traditional arts are well accepted and they are unique of its kind. The gallery initiates and organizes massive retrospective exhibitions in the capital and in other cities. Such exhibitions were made lately as jubilee exhibitions of Boris Denev, Vasil Stoilov, Ivan Christov, Rafael Michailov, Janaki Manasiev and others.
