Faux Finishing
Font size:  A  A  A
Faux and fantasy finishes offer a wonderful array of options to suit any decorating project you plan.
Faux Finish techniques are a great way to create an atmosphere in a room. Use a semi-translucent glazing and blending medium to create faux finishes and decorative painting techniques. Easily create the illusion of natural materials such as wood, marble, and granite or fantasy finishes like sponging, rag rolling, or dragging.
Tips
•        The easiest way to choose colors is by using the take home color strips available at your local paint store.
•        Select colors that compliment your furniture, window treatments, carpet to coordinate the look of your room
•        The process consists of layering different translucent colors over a base coat, choose colors that are the same color family to achieve the best results.
•        The color you apply last will be the most predominant.
•        You will usually choose a light color for a base coat. Your glaze color should be two three shades deeper than the base coat.
•        Experiment before ordering colorful paint, brightly colors walls might look good in someone else's home, but test the color before diving in.
•        Observe how light interacts with the color you could be living with morning, noon, and night. Many colors look completely different in natural light than in artificial light.
•        Make sure you like all the moods and tones your color choices bring into your home.
•        If you are less enamored with the color by the end of the week, try another one and be grateful you found out before you made a big investment.
•        Neutral or subtle tones in your wall color is often recommended, as they give you the freedom to accessorize in a variety of colors that can be changed as often as you like.
Faux Finish Basics
Faux Finish techniques are a great way to create an atmosphere in a room. Blend and glaze is a semi-translucent glazing and blending medium used to create faux-finishes and decorative painting techniques. Easily create the illusion of natural materials such as marble, wood, granite or fantasy finishes like sponging, rag rolling or dragging.
Materials needed
•        Paint tray
•        Lint-free rags
•        Rubber gloves
•        Painters tape
Foreword
•        Always prepare the surface properly before decorating
•        Try experimenting first on sample boards
•        Work quickly and complete each section before the glaze becomes tacky, about 10-15 minutes.
•        Use protective gloves when glazing for easy clean-up
•        Always use lint-free rags. Flannel, diapers, cheesecloth or sheets work well.
1.        First step: Surface preparation
o        A completely sealed surface is important for successful decorative painting. Fill all the cracks, holes, depressions, etc.
o        Prime and seal with a primer sealer of your choice.
o        Apply a base coat of any interior satin or semi-gloss (oil-based) or latex paint in a color of your choice and allow to dry overnight.
o        Once the base coat has dried, mask off any areas not to be decorated using painter's tape. Remove the tape immediately after the last glazing step.
2.        Second step: Mixing the glaze
o        Blend and glaze decorating painting liquid is available in either oil-based formula or in latex version. Both are excellent for any decorative painting project
o        Oil-based formula offers exceptional transparency and lends a rich glow to painted surfaces.
o        Latex blend and glaze produces fresh pure color, has little odor and cleans up with just soap and water.
o        For more translucent finish, add more blend and glaze. For a more opaque look, use more paint.
o        Make sure you have enough glaze mixed to complete the entire job. It may be difficult to mix the exact color if you should run out. If you do run out, stop in a corner or natural break.
3.        Fourth step: Top coating
o        Blend and glaze is washable and durable. However, for added protection, luster and depth on furniture, doors, trim, floor and craft items, topcoat with a water or oil-based polyurethane.
o        It's not necessary to top coat walls or ceilings. Allow 48 hours dry time before applying top coat.
