Since ancient times people have used the fireplace for heating and to create comfort in the family home. In Bulgaria in the past, the fireplace as a primitive hearth served only for heating, cooking and lighting. In the evenings the whole family used to gather around the fireplace. It was a major symbol of family life and domestic culture.
Modern fireplaces are an integral part of the architectural design of the house and are built as heating appliances which are in harmony with its interior. In the past, in the center of most rural houses, as a rule, huge fireplaces were built on the second floor. The walls were built in such a way that heat could penetrate in all rooms. The “Dzhamal” served for cooking and for heating all rooms. In Bulgaria this type if fireplace was also called “Odzhak”.
The fireplace is a symbol of fire that unites the family, brings romance and family comfort in every home. Even the smell of freshly burnt wood and the popping noise, make us sit back and relax. The heat from the real fire in the fireplace is unmatched by any other method of heating. It also relaxes the senses and the emotions it brings are indescribable. |
