| The Bulgarian Inventions That Changed Our Lives |

Many researchers of Bulgarian descent came up with inventions that have changed the world and devices that are so useful for us today that we cannot imagine our lives without them. So, which are they?
The Cyrillic Alphabet – used by most Slavic people nowadays across Eastern Europe, North and Central America. This alphabet was invented by St. Clement of Ohrid, based on its Glagolitic alphabet by Sts. Cyril and Methodius
The airbag – the airbag was invented by engineer Assen Jordanoff. Nowadays the airbags are an important part of the automobile safety and have saved many human lives.
The automatic automotive transmission – that was devised by Rumen Antonov. It reduces the fuel spending and is quite applicable in smaller cars. This patented invention was sold to major automotive companies such as Peugeot, Renault, Rover, Honda, Suzuki and DaimlerChrysler.
Lactobaciliius bulgaricus – discovered by Stamen Grigorov and patented in 1905. The famous bacteria is used for the production of yogurt. It feeds on lactose and produces lactic acid that is then used to preserve milk. The same person further made a serious contribution to the creation of the anti-tuberculosis vaccine.
The sixth heart sound – discovered by Ivan Mitev in 1972. This is an additional heart tone that can be found in people with aortic valve shortage.
The Nivalin drug – extracted by the pharmacologist Dimitar Paskov. The drug was once used as anesthetic, and was also applied in physiotherapy, surgery, and psychiatry, as well as for treatment of modertate Alzheimer disease, memory and vascular impairments. It was extracted from a local plant called the Summer Snowflake.
The oral contraceptive pills – invented by Carl Djerassi – a chemist of Jewish, Austrian and Bulgarian origin.
The photocopier – invented by Georgi Nadjakov, a Bulgarian Academician, who studied photo electricity back in 1937.
Talking book for the blind – invented by the Bulgarian student Luchezar Tsvetanov in the United States when he got the first place in a competition for creation of models. The book reaches standard size and has buttons of different shapes to help the blind readers.
Inter-linguistic revolution – invented by the engineer Koycho Mitev in 2005. He uses an algorithm to encode the human speech. It allows communication in real time through translation without need of a translator.
The digital wristwatch - an invention by Petar Petrov. The first one was created and sold in 1969. He also invented the device that can measure the air pollution.
The wireless heart monitor – invented by Petar Petrov again, who worked for NASA during the 1960s under the Apollo Program. This wireless monitor is still in wide use today in hospitals across the world.
The first digital electronic computer – invented by John Atanasov during 1930s at Iowa State College.
The telephone system for automatic answering and message recording – invented by Assen Yordanoff, which received a patent in the United States.
The first purpose-built bomb dropped from air to surface – by captain Simeon Petrov back in 1912, from the Bulgarian Air Force. This invention further included an impact detonator and a stable x-trail. The Bulgarian Air Force became the first military to apply the airplane bombing tactics during war actions.
The drop bombs (grenades) – invented by the Bulgarian Air Force pilot Christo Toprakchiev and used during the First Balkan War in 1912.
The third plane wing – invented by Asen Yordanov, used to stabilize the aircraft on gradients that are larger than 45 degrees.
Space food – invented by Cvetan Svetkov in 1972. The method they used preserves all nutrients in the food, which also keeps its shape despite of the temperature. The freeze dried foods created are for meals under harsh conditions and are produced by modern methods known as cryobiotech.
The most remote planet from Earth – discovered by Dimitar Daddelov in 2003.
Battery using solar energy – discovered by Dimitar Chernev, this invention enables us today to use the solar energy for cooling and heating.
The anti-weapons – invented by the engineer Yuri Markov. The device he created is in the size of a pocket knife but it can detect firearms and explosives in a radius of more than 10 meters through a concrete wall.
A reliable system for registration of nuclear explosions anywhere in the world – invented by Prof. Dr. Krystyo Krastev, which played a unique role in the world peace and security.
Piston Steam Engine – invented by Nikolay Toshkovich, who improved the pistons of the steam engine back in 1857 by using elastic bands arranged in special channels located on the surface of the piston.
The Brownian gas – invented by ilia Valkov during the 1930s. The mixture of 2 parts of hydrogen and one part of oxygen. He found a simple way to store these parts together in one container without explosion and used the reaction between them for the motion of vacuum automobile engine. The same person also took part in the creation of a new gas mix scuba without applying the hard scuba spacesuits normal atmospheric pressure. Thanks to that the divers could use light neoprene suits to go to considerably more depth compared to any other famous mix prior to it.
This list is pretty amazing and it makes us think – what else can these Bulgarians come up with? These are just some of the things they invented for a century, so can you imagine what they will give to the world in the next one or two decades? Well, we can only wait and see what the future has in store for us. I am sure it will be pretty awesome! |
