Archeological museum – Veliko Tarnovo
The Archaeological Museum in Veliko Tarnovo keeps the most precious findings of the archaeologists, preserving information about the way of living in the region of Veliko Tarnovo from the Ancient times. One of the most interesting exhibits is that of the oldest pieces of gold in the world: unique golden treasure from the Neolithic age.
Here one can also acquaint oneself with the biggest collection of earthenware and pottery in Bulgaria, dating from the time of the Romans, as well as with well- preserved products of plastic artistry from the bronze and the Stone Age.

Numerous findings from the excavations of the medieval town are exhibited too: golden and silver jewellery and coins, painted ceramics from Veliko Tarnovo, original murals and icons, tools, and bone objects. In the stone garden called Lapidarian there are architectural details, statues and arises from the Roman age.
The same building is also the premise of the Town library, which is one of the richest books libraries in Bulgaria.

“The Nativity” Church
The earliest church in Arbanassi is the Cathedral of Nativity. It is comprised of a naos (the men’s section), a narthex (the women’s section), a gallery running on the north and on the west, having a chapel at its eastern end dedicated to St. John the Baptist. The architectural and mural details attest that the church was built in three distinct stages. The oldest part of the church, which is indeed the naos, was, in the very beginning, a separate church. It was erected in 1597. The mural compositions of the “Last Judgement” and the “Nativity” have survived the test of time. The narthex and the chapel were built during the second stage connected with an outdoor arcade. During the third stage of building the outdoor arcade was closed up into a gallery. The mural painting in the women’s section was completed in 1638. The resources were given by two married couples – Stamati and his wife Kero, and Stati and his wife Theodora, who in fact did the painting. The painting is done in a large frame on the walls and on the ceiling. The detailed series of themes and topics – “The Life of the Virgin Mary”, “The Tree of Jesse” and “Doomsday” abound in subjects and figured compositions. “Isaiah’s Tree” depicts the Biblical story of the lives of Christ’s predecessors. The presence of ancient philosophers and writers (Homer, Aristoteles, Plato, etc.) point at the humanistic trends of the time. The other two – “Doomsday” and “The Life of the Virgin Mary” reveal the greater interest in the cosmogonic problems – typical of the Late Middle Ages – namely the genesis and history of mankind. The painting in the chapel of St. John the Baptist and in the gallery was done in several stages – in 1632, 1643, 1649. The inscriptions bear the names of Arbanassian donors – Stoyna, Keratsa, Niku, Hadji Georgu.

The monument of the Assens
During the reign of the Bulgarian Kings Assen the 1st, Peter, Kaloyan and IAssen the 2nd, from 1185 to 1241, the BulgarianMedievalState, with Tarnevgrad as its capital, reached its highest political, economic and cultural peak. The monument of the Assens, is dedicated to these leaders.And was built in honor of the 800th anniversary from the proclamation of Tarnovo as the capital of Bulgaria. It is the most prominent monument in the city, and near it the StambolovBridge and State Art Gallery are located.

The monument of the Assens is situated on a beautiful terrace above the curb of the Yantra River and offers a magnificent view of the old town with its unique architecture and lay-out of the town.

St. Dimitar Church
The church of “St. Dimitar” in Veliko Turnovo is situated at the northeastern foot of Trapezitsa elevation on the right bank of Yantra River. It is the oldest Medieval church in Turnovo. It is related to the earliest manifestations of the Bulgarian rulers of the 12 th century. In 1185, when church was built the brothers Assen and Peter proclaimed the Uprising against the Byzantine invaders. It was a royal church up to the year 1230. The Bulgarian rulers Assen, Peter and Kaloyan were crowned in it. Here on 07.11.1204 Archbishop Vasilli was promoted to the rank of Patriarch of the Bulgarian church. Later at the end of XVII th and the beginning of the XVIII th century a monastery was built. The 4 big buildings found during the archeological excavations in 1971 belonged to it. They are situated to the east, west and south.

“St. Archangels Michael and Gavrail”
The church of “St. Archangels Michael and Gavrail” is the largest one in the architectural reserve of Arbanassi. It comprises an altar, a men’s department, a women’s department, a chapel called “St. Paraskeva” and a gallery.

The men’s department was built and painted in 17th century. The founder of the church was the family of Hadji Niku Kultukli – a nobleman from Arbanassi. In the northwestern part of the men’s department there is his portrait situated, as well as the portraits of his wife and children. In this part of the church there are painted the compositions of “Disembarkation to the underworld” and “The Nativity”.

he original music and striking illumination of audio-visual show “Tsarevgrad – Tarnov – sound and lights” recreates on the Tsarevets Hill an emotional image to remember of the Bulgarian history. The very first chords carry us to the time when the Thracians, Slavs and proto-Bulgarians inhabited this land. The music inspires thoughts about the creation of the Bulgarian state in 681 and also about the battles for its establishment. The music themes that follow symbolize the invasions of the enemies. After the Byzantine invasion in 1018 the shadow of slavery falls over the Bulgarian lands.

The melody of rebellion arises from the wails of the suffering Bulgarian people. The 1185 uprising brings freedom and glory to Tarnovgrad, which then becomes capital of the restored country.

Sokolovo Monastery
The Sokolovo Monastery is situated at the distance of 4km from Etara and 12km southeast of the centre of Gabrovo, at the foot of Stara planina Mountain, at the bank of Yantra river. It was established in 1833 by archbishop Yosiph, who had built a small wooden church, destroyed a year later. Soon after on the same place the main church of the monastery (a remarkable mountain of the Bulgarian National Revival culture) was built with the financial aid of donors from the villages of Etura and Nova Mahala.

In 1862 the icon painter Pavel Zograf and his son Nikola from the village of Shipka painted the men’s department and the large narthex of the church.
Later on the monastery turned into an educational center and Neofit Bozveli was a teacher in it. It also played active role in the struggles for national independence.

Samovodska charshia
The Samovodska charshia is the old market in the old capital of Bulgaria – Veliko Turnovo. In the early 19 th century, when the town was rapidly developing, there emerged a shopping center with lots of retail outlets and artisan workshops, bakeries and cafes. The nowadays existing workshops recreate the Renaissance atmosphere. There are cutlery, tannery, pottery, a carpenter’s shops and a weaving workshop, where the artisans follow authentic technologies of work.
During the 19 th century the important Tarnovian inns were located there. The most popular among them was the Hadji Nikoli Inn, which hosts nowadays the Ethnographic museum.

Mother Bulgaria monument
The monument is settled in the center of the town of Veliko Tarnovo and even some people consist that it is the center of the town. The monument is devoted to the fighters, who lost their lives in four wars – Russian – Turkish, Serbian – Bulgarian, the Balkan and the First World war. The monument was built in glorification to the perished with the local people’s donation. Officially it was opened at 06.05.1935. Later it become famous and known as “Maika Bulgaria” monument (“The Mother Bulgaria”).
