Veliko Turnovo Day |
|
The feast of Veliko Turnovo is assosiated with the victory of Tsar Ivan Asen II over the Epirus Despot Theodore Comnenus in the Battle of Kolkotnitsa on March 22 in 1230. The first informantion about the celebartoins on March 22 as Veliko Turnovo day dates since 1897. At that day the local community meets in the church of “St. Fourty Martyrs”. Amongst the guest were the commissioner Dondukov-Korsakov, the army, priests, officials, MP’s from the pursueing at that time Consytitutive assembly, many citizens. For the first time after the Ottoman slavery, not only Veliko Turnovo citizens attest honour to the past, but all the government, as well. Since then March 22 has been celebrated as the day of Veliko turnovo up until 1944. After that date the day is not celebrated. For its refund a big merit is due to the Veliko Turnovo citizens who organise a meeting in the church of “St. Fourty Martyrs” called “My dear town” in 1970. Their idea is supported by Veliko Turnovo community in 1984 and from that time March 22 is an official Veliko Turnovo day. Source: veliko-tarnovo.net |
