Bulgaria, Romania to Develop Undersea Tourism Routes
Font size:  A  A  A
Undersea tourism routes will connect Bulgaria's Kaliakra to Romania's Constanta under the Heras project, according to Prof. Atanas Palazov.

Palazov, head of the Institute of Oceanology at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, informed that the project had won funding under the Romania-Bulgaria Cross Border Cooperation Programme and was to receive a total of EUR 1.5 M under the European Regional Development Fund.

Palazov, as cited by the Bulgarian Telegraph Agency, made clear that divers and researchers from Bulgaria and Romania were working on the project.

He explained that they were to search the seabed for sunken ships and ports.

Palazov noted that the idea was to develop the most modern and most expensive tourist industry for visiting underwater artifacts in the region.

He said that sunken ships, ports and buildings dated IV – V century B.C. were to be found on the seabed between Kaliakra and Constanta, adding that the sites would attract the interest of tourists from all over the world.

Palazov said that after the earmarked sites were examined by undersea archeologists, a book listing the most interesting routes would be compiled.

He announced that the project was to last until February 2015 and it also envisaged the training of diving instructors who would be undersea tourist guides.
