Bulgarian municipalities to develop cultural, spa and eco-tourism
Font size:  A  A  A
Travelling on an ancient Roman road, visiting spas, remnants of ancient castles and exploring the natural beauty of the Central Balkan Mountains. This is offered in a new project that aims at developing sustainable tourism in the region.

It will involve the municipalities of Troyan, Karlovo, Sopot and Hissarya, located on both sides of the mountain. The Balkan municipalities of Kazanlak and Pavel Banya have also shown interest in the project. Each one of the municipalities offers a colorful bouquet of opportunities for cultural, rural and ecological tourism. Under the Via Traiana Balkanica project, a tourist route is to be created along the ancient and longest Roman road Via Traiana. Along the route tourists will see the ruins of ancient fortifications such as Sostra, Montemno etc. Long ago the Via Traiana road used to connect Rome to the Middle East and the eastern parts of the Roman Empire. The project will be funded under the 'Regions for Growth program, which allocates 112 million euro just for tourism. Beneficiaries may be municipalities and NGOs, the press center of the Ministry of Economy and Energy reported.

According to Deputy Minister of Economy and Energy Branimir Botev, who is responsible for tourism, in the framework of the project ski tourism in the Beklemeto area may be developed, where the longest natural snow-retention in Bulgarian mountain resorts is observed. The region has very good conditions for spa tourism as there are over 50 mineral water springs in the area. Especially popular for healthy recreation are the resort towns of Chiflik, Banya, Hissarya, and Pavel Banja. Fans of cultural tourism often visit the Valley of Thracian Kings, where a number of historical sites can be seen.

Besides possibilities for year-round tourism, one of the advantages in the region is also the location - an hour and a half away from the Sofia Airport and 45 minutes away from the Plovdiv Airport. All this is combined with opportunities for wine tours and wellness tourism, experts working on the project say.
