The administrative center of the municipality is the town of Zlataritsa, suituated on the two banks of “Zlatarishka” river. The names of the town and the river are derived from the extraction of gold from the waters of this river, in the Middle Ages. And so they where named after the word “zlato”, which in English stands for “gold”. Zlataritsa is 25km east from the significant old capital of Bulgaria – Veliko Tarnovo, 250km north-east from Sofia, 200km north-west from Bourgas and 225km south-west from Varna.
The first settlement in the place of Zlataritsa emerged in the 14th century, while the villages in the Zlataritsa municipality were established even earlier, during the Second Bulgarian Kingdom. Nevertheless, traces of human presence in the municipality date back 6,000-7,000 years ago. Remains of a fortress can be found in the “Gradishteto” area, while to the south of Zlataritsa, archeologists have discovered an old Roman road to Tsarigrad (Istanbul). Many are the natural attractions and the cultural monuments in the territory of Zlataritsa Municipality. There are lots of preserved churches and authentic houses from Bulgaria’s Revival period. The most popular of these churches is the “St. Nikola” church in Zlataritsa, which is unique with its icons, wall-paintings and architectural design. Impressive are “Lunna Dolina” (Moony Valley) in Ribartsi, which is known as the summer residence of the Tarnovo Tsars; the lovely park in “Raichevoto” area; the medieval church in the village of Gorsko Novo Selo; and the historical museum in Zlataritsa.
