| Bulgaria has its own cultural institute in London |

On September 28th this country unveiled its own cultural institute in London, which became the 11th European city with a Bulgarian institution of this kind. A Bulgarian Cultural Center was opened for a first time in Budapest back in 1936, thus starting the tradition for the establishment of sustainable cultural relations with other countries. Similar institutes for representation of the rich Bulgarian culture and ancient history have been unveiled in Vienna, Warsaw, Prague, Moscow, Rome, Paris, Bratislava and Skopje since then. Minister of Culture Vezhdi Rashidov was also invited at the London event.
“The unveiling of another cultural center represents the opening of this country towards the world – Minister Rashidov commented for Radio Bulgaria. – Now it is essential the right policy to be conducted, since we need the attention of the world. We know who Picasso is and so we want the rest of the world to know about our great artists, such as Vladimir Dimitrov – Maystora and Zlatyu Boyadzhiev. That is why I think culture should cross borders. We can say the same thing about art sculpture and historic monuments, about Bulgarian cinema too. That is why this opening to the world is so necessary. Bulgaria should be presented via the richness of its culture.”
A huge Bulgarian community resides in Great Britain that needs a place for meetings, for maintaining of cultural links. The relations between both countries have their diplomatic and economic roots. The new institute will strengthen the cultural exchange between Sofia and London.
The organizers of the event want the Bulgarian Cultural Center in London to turn into an attractive place for both the Bulgarians, who live there and to all those people, who show some interest into the history and culture of this country. Exhibitions, concerts, Bulgarian plays and movies – those will all be included in the program of the center. The organizers expect some interest towards courses in Bulgarian language. One of the most extravagant ideas is for the creation of workshops that will present old crafts and traditions of Bulgarian lifestyle. Special courses in embroidery, woodcarving, iconography, weaving etc. will be organized too. Nights of Bulgarian fashion and national cuisine are expected. A library and a reading room will be opened at the institute in the beginning of 2012. A permanent exhibition of paintings by Bulgarian artists will be exposed at the Sofia Gallery that is a part of the cultural center too. However, the main ambition of the organizers is the gallery to turn into some sort of a cultural bridge for cooperation with other institutions of this kind for the creation of common cultural projects.
