Paragliding is the recreational and competitive adventure sport of flying paragliders.Despite not using an engine, paragliders flight can last many hours and cover many hundreds of kilometers, though flights of one to two hours and covering some tens of kilometers are more the norm. Flying a paraglider is one of the most pleasant ways to experience the freedom. Being taken on a tandem by an experienced pilot - instructor is one of the most accessible ways to do it. There are no requirements and limits - anyone who is brave enough can try paragliding. Bulgaria offers excellent weather and field conditions for the sport. The prices are not high and the places where you can do it in Bulgaria are a lot.
One of the best places near Veliko Tarnovo is the village of Skalsko, which is 30 km away. The area is picturesque and you can delight at the sights from above while flying. The take off is 660 meters above sea level. It offers stunning views.
Another place where you can try flying is next to the Lyaskovets monastery, The takeoff is 440 m above sea level. In a good weather conditions you can see Arbanasi and Veliko Tarnovo from the glider. And the takeoff is only 5 km away from Veliko Tarnovo.
There a few takeoffs in Stara Planina near Shipka and Buzludzha monuments, which are 1-hour drive away from Veliko Tarnovo. From there you can see both Northern and Southern Bulgaria and the whole mountain.
The most famous place in Bulgaria and in Europe for paragliding is 2 hour drive from Veliko Tarnovo - Sopot. There you can try flying with tandem or you can learn flying by your own. There are a lot of courses for beginners. It is a great place for both relaxation and extreme sports.
