4 things people get wrong when moving |
|
The task of moving home is daunting and tedious, especially for renters who are constantly on the move.
Relocating is a mammoth task, yet so many people don’t fully prepare for a move. This can make the process even more stressful.
So what do most people get wrong on moving day?
Here are some tips that will help you avert disaster. 1. Packing boxes inefficiently
One of the biggest mistakes of moving homes is something that might seem mundane, but will pay rewards if done properly: packing boxes efficiently.
As the deadline for the arrival of the moving truck looms, people tend to cram their belongings into any place that’ll fit.
The difference between having neatly-packed boxes and a jumble of your possessions is huge. It’s worth taking the time and effort to arrange your things. Label your boxes instead of relying on your memory. Using the correct labels will make a world of difference when you unpack in your new home. Have categories for different boxes and put similar items together. This will save you from having to pull apart every box in order to find everyday items, such as your hair straightener. Pack things neatly. This will ensure maximum efficiency of space and can help ensure your things arrive in one piece. 2. Being disorganised
Start moving weeks in advance. Begin packing as early and consistently as possible. This way, you won’t leave it until the last minute.
Things you don’t need everyday, such as towels, sports equipment and documents, can be packed ahead of time. Make sure you allow for enough time for packing in advance. 3. Not packing an essentials kit
Keep your everyday items separate from the rest of the gear for easy access later on.
This might include toiletries, blankets, pillows, medication, phones and chargers, clothes or anything else you might need immediately after moving in. 4. Keeping junk
This is a commonly overlooked process in a move. Do you really need to take everything you may have collected over the years to your next property?
The general rule is: When in doubt, throw it out. This is a simple phrase which can have a huge impact on what goes on the moving van.
Before you throw it in the bin, think about ways to sustainably dispose of your unwanted goods. Organisations such as St Vincent De Paul, the Salvation Army, Savers and many more will happily take your pre-loved clothing, crockery, electronics, CDs and toys. It pays to check with your chosen charity or group before you drop off unused items.
If you have a lot of valuable things, garage sales are also an efficient way of getting rid of while making money.
For online sales, Facebook buy/sell and swap groups and classified sites like Gumtree, are home to thousands of people waiting to snap up a bargain. After all, one man’s trash is another man’s treasure. |
