Greek ship emerges from the past
Font size:  A  A  A
A local amateur diver has accidentally stumbled across an ancient Greek ship during yet another diving off the island of St. Ivan in the vicinity of the town of Sozopol. Thanks to the preserved pottery the find has been dated to the beginning of the Greek colonization of the Black Sea - 4th century BC. More interesting, however, is the cargo of the ship - well-processed rectangular stones (squares) made of limestone. According to the head of the National Museum of History Bozhidar Dimitrov, this explains why ancient Apollonia (present-day Sozopol) was built precisely on such stones given the quarries in the region are only made of granite and gneiss. Until now, scientists believed that limestone was supplied from the area of present-day Balchik on the northern Black-sea coast. But apparently the ships coming from the Aegean Sea, some of which reach 100 tonnes of displacement, were loaded with expensive but lightweight goods and used these stones for ballast. Upon anchoring in Apollonia, they sold them to local residents, as on their return path they were already well-filled with grain, timber and other heavier cargo. The ship has a tourist value and could be used as an attraction for lovers of scuba diving, experts say.
