The Festival of Veliko Tarnovo is celebrated as a memoriam of Tzar Ivan Assen II’s victory over Epirus Despot Theodore Komnenos which happened near Klokotnitsa back in 1230. The church "St. 40 Martyrs" was built in his honor.
After the victory Bulgaria became a crucial force on the Balkans and expanded its borders to three seas. The legend says that before the tzar headed with his troops to the battlefield, he wanted to see what date was carved on the newly built temple. It turned that it was the third month of the year - the month which celebrates the day of the 40 Holy Martyrs. In that Tsar Ivan Assen II saw a happy omen.
On March 22 in 1925 the temple celebration of the St. 40 Martyrs becomes the official holiday of Tarnovo (Veliko Tarnovo today).
The celebration normally begins with a solemn liturgy in the Church of St. 40 Martyrs. As part of the celebrations in the city is a student procession carrying portraits of the benefactors of Veliko Tarnovo.
In front of a municipal building the national flag raised the national flag along with flag of the city. Holiday concerts and the traditional Youth Street parade are also part of the celebration. The evening celebrations include the well-known spectacle "Tsarevgrad Tarnovo - Sound and light”.
