Mexican cactuses- New attraction near Veliko Tarnovo
Font size:  A  A  A
The appearance of cactuses of the Opuntia type typical for the American prairie, rather than for the damp slopes of the Balkan Mountain Range remains mystery. Each May and June the large area of cactuses which spreads over nearly 0.5 hectares tints in yellow and red blossoms, turning itself into an irresistible attraction for many tourists. However, the local people also enjoy this exotic view. The rumors about this picturesque village and its cactus field have spread quickly in a matter of few years only and Pushevo is now getting packed wit foreigners. Some of these foreigners are the former cabaret musicians Gary and Ellie Martin who settled there ten years ago after they crossed all parts of Bulgaria in search of a proper place. Igor and Natalia from Moscow are the latest members of the foreign colony who settled in Pushevo. They built a neat house in the village suburbs and are now spending their time walking amidst the cactus plants and relaxing near the small river which meanders in close proximity to the local healing spring which is the other pride of the people in Pushevo. It is perhaps interesting to note that even the elderly people living there have no idea how the cactus field appeared near the village. They only ascertain that these thorny plants multiply each year and cover a larger area. The local people are convinced that the exotic plants have huge potential to boost tourism in this region, as they are unique for all Europe. That is why the interest in the cactus festival held in the village of Pushevo attracts huge interest. Special explanatory brochures about the local cactuses and the legends about them were published. Besides, Pushevo is also proud with its lilac, cornel-tree and hawthorn forests. The authorities are now working over a project of an eco-route which is to take tourists from the cactus field to the so-called Bozhur (Peony) meadow which is an interesting attraction with its fiery red plants. Thus, the little popular village of Pushevo is slowly turning into a huge tourist attraction and is soon to position on the Bulgarian tourist map.
