Bulgaria's Foreign Tourism Revenue up by 1,3% in Jan-Sept 2009

Bulgaria’s revenue from international tourist visits in the first nine months of 2009 amounts to EUR 2,271 B, which is a 1,3% increase compared to the same period of 2008.

This becomes clear from data released Thursday by the Ministry of Economy, Energy, and Tourism.

In this first ten months of 2009 – January-October – Bulgaria was visited by 5 281 220 foreign tourists not counting transit passengers, which is a decrease of only 0,2% compared to their number in the first ten months of 2008.

Of those, 75,7% or 3 998 854 tourists were citizens of other EU countries, which is a 2,9% increase compared to the same period of 2008.

Bulgarian citizens made a total of 4 399 418 trips abroad in January-October 2009, a decline of 11,2% year-on-year. They spent a total of EUR 1,038 B, which is a drop of 16,9%.

59,6% of the Bulgarian trips abroad were to other EU member states – or a total of 2 621 440 trips; the decrease is 14,1% compared to the first ten months of 2008.
