Wednesday, Apr 08, 2009
The total number of construction projects given safety certificates in Bulgaria in 2008 was 4792 and 460 buildings were demolished, weekly Stroitelstvo Gradut reported. Of those, 3376 permits were issued by local offices of the National Inspection for Building Control, and the rest by the central office.

Of the projects completed last year, several of them were deemed to be of key importance, including two multi purpose hospitals in Plovdiv and Sliven, sections of the Maritsa motorway and the renovation of the Rousse railway station.

Several major Bulgarian towns have underwent gasification projects, others still in operation. Completed gasification has been achieved in Kyustendil, Bourgas, Varna, Lovech, Montana, Rousse, Kameno, Stara Zagora, Bourgas, Samokov, Veliko Turnovo, Plovdiv and several other towns.

Three new waste and water treatment plants commenced work in Madam, Razlog and Zlatograd. Furthermore, a hazardous waste landfill in Maritsa East 2 power plant has been 'neutralised', the report says.

Among the several renewable wind park generators that are currently under construction, one is ready and in exploitation, the wind farm in the village of Baya near Sliven in southeastern Bulgaria.

Retail-wise, among the big chains that have completed outlets and opened for business across the country are Kaufland, Billa, Metro and Technomarket.

The tourist sector has seen the opening of several new hotels, mainly on the Black Sea coast.
