Bulgaria needs at least 30 golf courses

The share of this type of tourism is only 0.1% p.a. of the total supply in this country despite the big potential for development. As of now there are only four golf complexes meeting the standards of the European Golf Association - Sveta Sofia near Ravno pole village, Black Sea Rama and Lighthouse near Balchik, and Pirin Golf in Razlog. In 2009 - 2010 two more are expected to start operation - Thracian Cliffs near Kavarna, and Golf Club Ibar - Dolna Bania, at 10 km from Borovets. These are some of the conclusions and facts in the main directions for encouragement of investments in golf tourism developed by an expert panel co-chaired by the ministers of regional development Asen Gagauzov and of the environment Dzhevdet Chakarov. Among the measures to speed up this process is the public-private partnership, integration of golf tourism with the other types of specialized tourist products - yacht and spa, so as to attract high class tourists, use of state-owned wasteland for golf courses, etc. Some of the results of the golf tourism development will be doubling of the summer tourist season up to 9-10 months, transformation of the mountain resorts into year-round destinations, attraction of high-class tourists, transformation of the market into the direction of the luxurious houses segment, etc.
