February Tourism Nights Revenue Up by 7% Y/Y - Statistics

The total revenue from nights spent in February 2017 reached 45.8 million leva, which is 7 per cent more compared to February 2016, the National Statistical Institute reported Tuesday. An increase was registered in the revenue from both foreign citizens and Bulgarians - by 14 .0 per cent and 0.2 per cent, respectively.

In February 2017, there were 1,832 accommodation establishments (hotels, motels, camping sites, mountain chalets and other establishments for short-term accommodation with more than 10 beds) operating in the country, with 54,200 rooms and 109,800 beds. Compared to a year earlier, the total number of accommodation establishments decreased by 2.3 per cent, while the number of beds dropped by 1 per cent.

The total number of nights spent registered across accommodation establishments this February was 907,500, which is 0.4 per cent more, compared to last February. The largest increase (10.5 per cent) was observed at three-star hotels.

Four- and five-star hotels have accommodated 72.1 per cent of all foreigners and 36.4 per cent of all Bulgarians in February. In the period under review, the nights spent in three-star hotels by foreigners accounted for 20.9 per cent and the ones by Bulgarians - for 36.4 per cent. One- and two-star hotels had the following break up of nights spent: 29.3 per cent Bulgarians and 7 per cent foreigners.

A total of 381,200 people spent nights at accommodation establishments this February, which is 1.7 per cent more compared to February 2016, with Bulgarians making up 65.7 per cent of them. Most Bulgarians (62.7 per cent) chose to stay at one- two- and three-star hotels, for an average of 2.1 nights. The number of foreigners is 130.8 per cent, which is 15.8 more than a year earlier, with 71.3 of them opting for four- and five-star hotels, and spending an average of three nights.

The overall occupancy of beds was 30.4 per cent, which is 1.6 percentage points more than in February 2016. The highest occupancy was reported at four- and five-star hotels - 45 per cent, followed by three-star hotels - 30.1 per cent, and one- and two-star hotels - 16.5 per cent.
