Chinese company crazy about Bulgarian raspberries

Representatives of one of China's largest companies for processing of raspberries, strawberries and wild berries is looking for trade partners in Bulgaria.

The seven-member delegation led by the company's chairman of the board, attended the first ever Raspberry Festival, organized by the Bulgarian Association of Raspberry Growers (BARG) in the small northeastern town of Loznitsa.

"The Chinese are here because they know Bulgaria is Europe's third largest raspberry producer," BARG chairman Bozhidar Petkov said.
To give an example of the sector's rapid growth (about 50% for 2015), he added that raspberry massifs in Bulgaria have expanded by 500 ha since last year, which is an increase by 25%.

"This year's raspberry harvest is 3,232 tons, or 3.62 tons from hectare," Deputy Agriculture Minister Svilen Kostov said at the festival's opening.

Sixty farmers from across the country showed off their fines raspberries at this year's festival in Loznitsa. Loznitsa Mayor Ayhan Hashamov is a raspberry and strawberry grower himself. He says this is a family business.
