Excavation of Bulgaria's Largest Thracian Mound to Begin in May
Wednesday, Mar 23, 2016
The excavation of the largest unstudied Thracian mound in Bulgaria and the Balkan peninsula will begin in May. The Thracian mound of Maltepe, is located near the village of Manole, fifteen kilometres from the city of Plovdiv. The final aim of the project, which is worth BGN 1.6 M, is to establish an archaeological centre with an open-air museum. Archaeologists are expecting to find remains and treasures of noblemen from the Odrysian tribe, with their hopes being particularly high as the mound has not been subject to looting. The excavations will be headed by the director of the archaeological museum in Plovdiv, Dr. Kostadin Kisyov. The open-air museum is set to be included on the first tourist route in the municipality of Maritsa. It has not yet been decided whether the artifacts will be exhibited in the mound itself or around it. The project foresees the establishment of an information centre and study halls for young archaeologists. The project is part of Plovdiv's 2019 European Capital of Culture concept. A total of BGN 1.57 M will be provided through the Norway grants programme, while Maritsa municipality will contribute BGN 50 000.
