Qatar to embark on new investments in Bulgaria this year, Qatari PM says
Friday, Mar 16, 2012
Qatar is interested in investing in the tourism, services, infrastructure and agricultural sectors in Bulgaria, it emerged at a joint news conference by visiting Bulgarian Prime Minister Boiko Borissov and his host, Qatar’s prime minister and foreign minister Hamad bin Jassem bin Jabor Al Thani.

"We plan to start investments as early as this year," Qatar’s prime minister said.

Officials from the two countries would meet on March 13 2012 to follow up discussions on these investments, the news conference was told.

Borissov said that he appreciated the great interest of the Qatari government in investing in infrastructure projects such as airports, highways and services, especially given that this interest was expressed against the background of the global financial and economic crisis.

A Bulgarian Government statement after the meeting said that opportunities for Qatari investments in areas such as agriculture, tourism, spa and mineral springs had been outlined.

Borissov said that Hamad bin Jassem bin Jabor Al Thani would visit Bulgaria in three to four months’ time for follow-up discussions on a number of projects, which include linking Bulgaria and Turkey in the field of energy and a liquefied natural gas project. Borissov said that there must be economic feasibility for such projects.

Borissov said that the Bulgarian side had proposed Qatari investment in a number of infrastructure projects such as renovation of Balchik airport and through a public – private partnership involving Qatar companies in building the Black Sea motorway between Bourgas and Varna.
