Bulgaria to award concessions for two airports

Bulgaria's transport ministry will seek private investors for the airports in the cities of Rousse and Plovdiv and will hold tenders for granting concessions for a period of 35 years, the government said in a statement. The concessioner of the Plovdiv airport, southern Bulgaria, must construct a cargo terminal to boost the airport's freight operations, while the investor in charge of the airport in the Danubian town of Rousse, that has been idle since 1999, will be required to restore its operations. The airport in Plovdiv is 58.08%-owned by Danish company Nordic Airport Infrastructure and 38.32% by the country through Plovdiv Airport EAD, which is the operator of the facility. The tender for the Rousse airport is the state's third attempt to find a private investor for the facility. According to the concession strategy for the airfield, it could be used for both passenger and cargo transportation or could be turned into a training hub.
