Bulgaria to apply to include six projects in trans-European transport network
Wednesday, Feb 23, 2011
Bulgaria will seek to add six road projects to the trans-European transport network (TEN-T), Regional Development Minister Rossen Plevneliev said on February 22.

Specifically, the Government has selected the Hemus motorway linking Sofia with the Black Sea city of Varna, the Rila high-speed road, two motorways, each connecting the cities of Rousse and Shoumen and Varna and Romania's city of Constanta, as well as two high-speed roads to the future bridges on the Danube river.

Earlier, Bulgaria was expected to apply to add only the Hemus motorway project to TEN-T.

The European Council will discuss the expansion of the TEN-T network on February 23 and 24, while a political decision will be made in June. The size of the funds to be allocated for the projects will be determined at a later stage, Plevneliev said.

"Bulgaria is going all out to include Hemus in the European transport network, because it means we would rely on European funding," he said.

On February 21, the European Commission said in a statement it had approved the distribution of 190 million euro to 51 transport projects in 24 EU member states, excluding Bulgaria.
