| Applicants for Bulgarian citizenship to undergo checks of their contribution to economy |

Foreigners wanting Bulgarian citizenship will be first examined for their contribution to the country's economy, Interior Minister Tsvetanov said.
The move, proposed during discussions concerning the state's new national strategy on migration, refuge and integration, will be presented to the Cabinet within two weeks.
Bulgaria will be considered as a destination for migrant groups, not only as a transit area, Tsvetanov said. The proposed strategy will ensure that immigrants' flow to Bulgaria will favour its economy and guarantee national security, he said.
The state will also seek to promote the return of Bulgarian emigrants to the country, which will be ensured through bilateral agreements between countries.
In 2010, Bulgaria registered a 35 per cent increase in the number of foreigners detained after having attempted to enter the country illegally. |
