Tryavna City

The municipal town of Tryavna, has become a resort settlement, preserved its authentic historic look. The town is set in the Tryavna river valley, within 230km east from the capital city Sofia and 240km south-west from the seaside town Varna. The remarkable old capital Veliko Tarnovo is about 40 km north, the town of “Humor and Satire” Gabrovo is 22km west from Tryavna.
The town of Tryavna was established as early as the Thracian Era. However, the first documents of its existence date back to 12th century. Later, during the Ottoman Yoke the Turks couldn’t gain access and control over the settlement and only Bulgarians lived in the town. In the period of the Bulgaria’s Revival Tryavna was involved in dynamical development of various crafts and became a center of talented constructors, wood-carvers, iconographers and goldsmiths. The first Bulgarian revival school was built in the town – The Tryavna School of Arts, whose skilled graduates became known all over the world. It is the reason why every house in Tryavna impresses with its unconventional design. In the past the ground floors of the houses had irregular shapes; the second floors featured wooden bow-windows; and the roofs were covered with well arranged stones. Most of these houses are restored today and proclaimed museums. Such is the “Petko and Pencho Slaveikovi” museum-house, situated in the old part of the town, where exhibition of their poetical works is presented. The “Kalinchev” house, transformed into an Art gallery, is also an interesting place to be visited. But mostly visited is the “Daskalov” house, known for the wood-carved suns. Further on, amongst the landmarks of Tryavna are the town’s Old Square, named “Capitan Diyado Nikola” /The Capitan Grandpa Nikola/; the Clock Tower dating from 1814; the Museum of icon-painting and wood-carving, set in Tsar’s chapel; the “St. Archangel Mihael” church built in the center of the town, and so on.
The National Park “Bulgarka”, including parts of Tryavna and Gabrovo Municipality is a remarkable spot, as well, having in mind the beautiful protected areas and the gorgeous natural landmarks. Another advantage of Tryavna is its proximity to the village of Voneshta Voda /20km/, famous for its healing mineral springs.
