All You Need To Know When Moving To A Small Town
Font size:  A  A  A
Moving to a small town has its advantages and disadvantages. If you are considering it, some will tell you it’s the best decision you could ever take, and others – you’ve gone nuts. This is because you should be quite aware of the decision that you are taking, and of course of the pros and cons of moving to a small town. Living in a small village is a decision you are surely pondering about before taking. Before considering moving from a big city to a small town, you need to know not only how to get there but also how to cope with the change and how to adjust to the new settings. So, what to do?

How to Deal with Moving to a Small Town?
Make a good research of the place you want to live in. Look for opportunities for employment, houses, crime rates, neighborhoods, average age of the locals, schools for your kids and things to do. Having some good knowledge in advance will help you decide which area suits you best and where you will find the right environment for you that you will be happy. Here below you will read about the advantages and disadvantages of relocating to a smaller village which will help you understand your options and take a decision.

Pros & Cons of Moving to a Small Town
Here are some advantages and disadvantages of moving from the city to a small town for you to consider before your relocation.

Cost of living. Generally, the prices in smaller places are lower, housing costs and incomes of course – too. Be prepared to get a cheaper home than the one you have in the big city but at the same time when looking for a job be ready to have lower incomes. Less expenses is one of the reasons to move to a small town. Moving a mobile home or buying a house there is up to you. If you will be shopping for a home, decide on what your needs are (do you need an extra room for your kids, do you plan to have 2 garages for your cars, etc.) and then explore the opportunities.
Job opportunities. A smaller place offers less companies and of course – less job opportunities. If you are looking for employment at a company that is more common like a secretary or generally an administrative position, then you may have higher chances, depending on the city itself. In case of moving to a rural area, you may consider having a farm and/ or working on one since job opportunities will be less and most probably mainly in the sphere of agriculture and house maintenance (like carpenter, plumber, etc.) This is just one idea regarding what to do in a small town.
Schools in the area. When moving from a large city to a small town you may find better schools with better discipline in general and more personal attention. In the case of moving to a rural town, you may find some schools with less funding which may mean not so good facilities like equipment for sports and books in the library. You just need to decide what matters to you and your kid(s).
The infrastructure will be different. On the one hand, when moving to a small town from the big city, you will surely enjoy much less traffic. On the other, you may find yourself stuck behind a tractor with no lane to pass it, on a dirty road with a construction that is falling apart. Also check what your network coverage is and does it disappear occasionally. How about TV? Make sure that you will feel well in such an environment and not isolated.
The locals. They may be people who like peace and quiet, or are fond of a healthier way of life. You may find out when moving to a very small town that the majority of population is in their 40s and 50s, or just many people who have decided to retire from the big city to a smaller one and have a rural kind of life. Anyway, moving to a small village is a decision anyone can take at any point in life so we cannot generalize. Most probably, whatever the locals’ age is, they will be friendlier and more welcoming than the people in the large city.
It’s a safer place. Generally the crime is lower. Still, when moving from the city to a small town, whichever it is, search online about the crime rates in order to be prepared with the info that you need. Why move to a small town if it is a more dangerous place than your home city?
Be ready for some changes in your regime. If you are looking to move to a small town, you should perhaps go and explore them and what they feel like, as rural areas could have a smell from the farms or a noise from the tractors being taken out for work early in the morning. Also, if the small town is near a big city or is a resort, near beautiful nature like water or a mountain, it may not remain as small in the years to come.
The climate. Check what the climate is like in the area. The air will be cleaner for sure, to begin with, and generally pollution will be less. Are there hurricanes, floods, mosquitoes, etc? What were the damages from the last tornado and do houses survive after such one? Is the infrastructure there (roads, electricity system, etc.) strong enough to withheld such bad weather? Think of the place when checking it up and visiting it like you are someone local, someone who lives there.
Services. You may have less services offered or you may have to wait longer for them, although they will most probably be cheaper than where you are right now. This means that if you have to get your window fixed you may have to wait for two weeks because the only person who knows how to do it is booked or away. Or learn some basics yourself so that if you need a carpenter, plumber, electrician, etc. you can handle smaller issues yourself instead of wait for days or even worse – weeks.
Conveniences. There may not be a shopping mall or a large supermarket, no movies, no interest clubs, etc. which means you may have to travel to the nearest bigger city to do your shopping or go to a club. Shopping online may cause you extra because you are further from the convenient big cities. No one wants to think about needing a hospital but in case you or someone from your family need help, how long would it be until an ambulance found you?
Small means small. When moving to a very small town be ready to meet all the same people everywhere – at the local pub, at the church, at the supermarket, etc. And no one new. Imagine a place where everybody knows each other and pretty much everyone knows almost everything about everyone else.
Good for the kids. Imagine a cleaner environment for them, being close to nature, less stress for you as parents, less commute and thus – more time for you and your children. They can get to know animals and will understand where eggs and tomatoes come from. There’s more tranquility for everyone and your kid can get to play outside, in fresh air, rather than in the pollution that big cities offer (besides the comfort).
